Discussion:
Cannot Connect Remotely to FTP using Dreamweaver CS4

I have been at this for a while and am at a loss. I can't connect to my site
remotely via Dreamweaver CS4 no matter what I do. I am unable to see my site
remotely or "put" files via the program. When I "test" my settings, I get a
long list of possible error messages, which I went through one by one and made
sure the possible issues were rectified. I was on the phone with Godaddy (my
hosting service) and they were at a loss. All my info is set correctly, but I
still get the errors. This is crap. I am so frustrated wasting my time with
this now that I wish I had used another program to create my site!

Anyone else have this problem? Is this a known issue? If so, it's a pretty
big one! I'm interested to hear. Thanks.

What error(s) are you/were you receiving?

The exact error are:

"An FTP error occurred - cannot make connection to host. Dreamweaver cannot
connect to host "ftp.dacktyl.com". This may be due to one or more of the
following reasons:

- The network cable is unplugged or the network is down. Please verify that
the network cable is connected and that the network is up.
- The FTP server is down. Please verify that you can connect to the FTP
server using another FTP program
- The FTP host name is incorrect. Please verify that the host name is
correct in the Site definition dialog box.
- The server uses SFTP and the 'Use Secure FTP' checkbox in the Site
definition dialog box isn't checked
- The server uses FTP and the 'Use Secure FTP' checkbox in the Site definition
dialog box isn't checked.
- Accessing the server requires firewall settings that aren't properly set.
Please verify that the firewall settings in the Site category of the
Preferences dialog box are properly set, and that the Use Firewall option in
the Site definition dialog box is selected.
- It is possible your FTP may be using a non-standard FTP port (21). If you
need to specify a non-standard port, enter the port number after the host name
separated by a colon.":"

No matter what I do and change I still get these exact errors.

Thanks for your time and help.

"An FTP error occurred - cannot make connection to host. Dreamweaver cannot
connect to host "ftp.dacktyl.com"
try the following in the FTP Address box:

dacktyl.com
if that doesn't work, try
www.dacktyl.com

If that doesn't work, try dacktyl.com and checkmark "use passive ftp"

if that doesn't work, it may be a firewall or router issue.

have you connected using some other ftp client?

what are the error messages?

http://help.godaddy.com/article/96

in dreamweaver, the info you would put in is:

ftp address: do not type the ftp:/ part
enter the part after the / for the address godaddy has given you

username and password- enter them exactly, they may be case sensitive.
Best is to copy and paste them from the email godaddy has sent

host directory: it sounds like this is not needed for this host.

Yes, the same thing happened to me. My page has a xmas greeting I was trying
to remove... and it was posted on 12/20/08... and so this problem "An FTP error
occurred - cannot make connection to host." began after that date. I too have
just spend a lot of time with GoDaddy and they said everything on their end
checks out fine. So, what is the problem?

That will tell you whether the problem is specific to Dreamweaver or not.

Sorry ... "it will give you a *strong indication* that the problem is
not specific to Dreamweaver".

I am having the same problem, but this is with connecting to my work Apache
server using secure FTP. My error messages vary, and it's clearly a Dreamweaver
CS4 problem, as I could connect with CS3 no problem, and I can still connect
via Fugu. Sometimes I can get it to work in CS3 again, but only if I use
short-commands (shift+command+u) and then only some times. I am very frustrated!

It is much more efficient for me to use Dreamweaver's FTP, so I wish someone
would give us a fix.

Please Adobe, help us!

Thanks Murray:
1. Install the latest updater for Dreamweaver
done
2. Make sure a site has been defined
it is
3. Is FTP your only option for connecting to the server?
no - I can UNIX in, but I want to use the DW FTP
4. Document the exact problem
it varies but often says the server is down or not accepting connections
5. Did your FTP site definition ever work correctly in Dreamweaver?
before I upgraded to CS4 it did and sometimes it will in CS3 still (sometimes
not)
6. Do other FTP clients function correctly with the server?
Yes
7. Does the problem exist with a different version of Dreamweaver or
Contribute?
It used to work with CS3 and now does sometimes. It has never worked with CS4

8. Can anyone in your group get Dreamweaver FTP to work with the server?
Others in my group are using CS3 and have not upgraded CS4. They have no
issues.
9. Can you connect to any FTP server from Dreamweaver?
Yes, I connected to Adobe
10. Are you behind a firewall?
No
11. Use passive FTP
I cannot. I have to use SecureFTP to get into the server.
12. Experiment with Server Compatibility options in the Site Definition
dialog box (Dreamweaver MX 2004 v7.0.1 only)
not this version
13. Verify FTP host information
done
14. Change the Host Directory information
done - did not work
15. Disable Upload Design Notes in Site Definition dialog box
didn't work
16. Change the site preference options
Holy crap! That worked.

Hope this will help others,

To further describe my success, I changed my FTP time out to 120 seconds. To do
this, you go to your preferences (Adobe instructions only tell you how to get
there in Windows) under the Dreamweaver main menu and select Site from the
Category column. Here you can change your time out #.

Best of luck to others - boy was this frustrating and time consuming!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have been struggling with this for a couple
weeks -- I'd been uploading fine in CS 3 through December, then suddenly after
the first of the year I kept getting the FTP error message even though I hadn't
changed any settings. After reading this thread I, too, changed my timeout to
120 seconds and now it works!! I thank you and my client thanks you!!!

Another problem that might be occuring is using WiFi at free locations. Alot of places block port 21, which is the required port for FTP. They do it to save bandwidth.
