I am trying to insert two tables side by side in order to do a page layout. It
automatically inserts the second table below the first one. Is there anything
I can do? Inserting it inside a layer doesn't work for me.

Any particular reason why you didn't create your table with two columns?
Functions the same way. Then you can nest tables inside each cell if
necessary.

Tim,

Thanks for your quick reply. I can't make things align right unless I convert
the tables to layers before I preview. When you make a nested table and then
convert back from layers to tables it messes things up. Try it you will see
what I am talking about. I am a newbie and I am sure you can help me.

don't use that menu item to convert from tables to layers, or layers to
tables.

It was put in the app to give a quick way to make a version of a page that
would be compatible with version 3 browsers. It's not for flipping back and
forth.

first question- are you in Layout Mode?
dw menu-->view-->tables-->regular table editing.

now, in regular editing you'll have more control and the properties
inspector will show all the details.

insert a table, one row by two columns.
then put your left table in the left cells, the right in the right...

does that work?

Please don't.

Generally, Layout mode will do more harm than good since the code that it
writes will come back to bite you later. You will be well rewarded by
spending an hour learning how to work with HTML tables from Standard mode,
and then never go back to Layout mode again. Check the table tutorials at
the DW FAQ link in my sig to get started on this....

Perhaps you meant "Design view"?
