Apparently you can check by looking in the Get Info window for an
application, but I only saw a headline in a junk email so don't really
know what it's meant to say there. Lion ditches support for PowerPC
applications, so it possibly says "PowerPC" or "Intel".

Then don't upgrade to Lion ... there's no essential "need" to upgrade
hardware or software simply for the sake of it, your Mac still works as
well as it always has.

My beige G3 PowerMac is over 10 years old, still does (almost) everything
I need, and in fact the only reason I even upgraded it from Mac OS 9 to
Mac OS X 10.1 was because my hopeless Internet provider refused to fix a
problem with their servers that wouldn't let Mac OS 9 or earlier users
even log in (as far as I've found every other ISP in the country still
works with older Mac OS versions and still help a couple of home users
with Mac OS 8.x).

I know that, and used my 7300 for ages. Didn't like OSX much, but have
got used to it now. But I am a tech Junkie - got SL the day it came
out, and would like to get Lion just because I can
.

I read about checking by going to the more info buton on the About this
Mac screen, but I dont get a list of my applications there for some
reason - perhaps because I dumped Spotlight.

But thanks for your answer

You're right ... sorry, it's not the application's Get Info window as I
said before, but is the Apple System Profiler (name may have changed in
new versions of Mac OS X) which has the Applications tab. You can get at
that via the About This Mac menu item or in your Applications -> Utilities
folder. It does search for applications, so might rely on Spotlight.

You can of course set-up your Mac to be dual-boot Snow Leopard and Lion
(or triple-boot if you use Windows as well). You may also be able to
install Snow Leopard under Parallels or Fusion so it runs in a window
under Lion, but I think that's actually breaks the licensing agreement.
