Image Map limits??

Hi - I have an image map that suddenly seemed to breakdown. There are about
200 hotspots of all different shapes linked to all different URLs. Many are
close areas but none are touching. Now a group of them will suddenly go to the
same URL.

Is there a limit on how many hotspots an image map can have??

Thanks.

Good grief. You have 200 hotspots on a single image? Why so many?

Well - Its' a map of North America with symbols on it representing some data.
It can't be done with a grid - like a table of slices either.

Believe me Murray - if I could have done it any other way I would have. I
tried a few things but this was the least of evils. (Tale of Woe provided upon
request) And html suits my comfort zone/level of knowledge.

Then this happened with the image map going sour.

Anyway - I rebuilt the page from scratch kinda and it's working. I must have
had an overlapping coordinate somewhere.

Thanks for asking.

had an overlapping coordinate somewhere.
That would be the next thing to look for.

Must you use the entire map? Would it be possible to have distinct regions
instead, with each giving you a more detailed map?

Murray - I wound up re building the whole map using all square areas except
absolutely necessary. It's working "as advertized now". Looking for an
overlap was making me buggy.

I've proposed the smaller region you suggested.
Thanks for your help.

Good luck! Sometimes a retrenching like this is exceptionally valuable.

I think I may have a theory. DMW doesn't like when you update the image that
the image map is built on.

The same problem that prompted me to start this string last week occurred
again on another map even when I was careful not to overlap areas, limited the
shapes used and checked links as I went along. Then I had to make a change to
the graphic itself and did so in Photoshop. When I saved it as a gif with the
same name it replaced the existing image on the page. I had to do this a few
times and was really pleased with the way DMW updated the image as fast as I
saved it from PSD. All of a sudden areas that should have been linked to #123
were pointing to #55 and other areas lost their links completely.

I don't know why an html page would care that it's map gif changed -
dimensions are the same, path is the same - what does the html code care what
picture you throw in there. Well Dreamweaver cares!

This is my current theory. Right now I'm not updating the image unless DMW is
shut down.

I woudn't think this is the right tree for you to be barking up. An image
is an image. An image map is an HTML construction. There is no correlation
between the two other than *the absolute coordinates* and the map's name.

If you are seeing the links change it's because you have done something to
the HTML not to the image.
