Discussion:
Suddenly can't see files on remote server

I am at a loss. I have been managing about 7 or 8 simple websites for quite a
few years using Dreamweaver MX 2004. This week, I have suddenly lost the
ability to see the remote files on about half of the websites I manage. The
files are there when I log on and look through the hosting service....but is
there something I can do so I can function again in Dreamweaver? I prefer to
use it to access remote files than to have to upload files one by one through
the hosting company!

Ideas, suggestions, help appreciated!

Are these sites listed in the Manage Sites dialog box?

If not- then something removed them, possibly a glitch in the Registry File.

Fix- If you created site def backup files, click on the .ste file and dw
will restore that site def.

If your OS has a repair or rollback feature, you could try that.

Or- you could manually enter the site definition information again. THEN
click the Export button in the Manage Sites dialog box to create a set of
.ste backup files in case it happens again.

Yes - the sites still show up when I go to the Manage Sites dialogue box. I
had upgraded computers about 6 months ago and used the .ste files to import all
the log-in information into Dreamweaver.

Should I go ahead and delete the sites first that aren't working, and then
rebuild them importing those older .ste backup files ?

Thanks - I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed this week and did not need this kind of
headache!

Just tried to re-install the .ste files after deleting the most recent
description I had been working with. It seemed to re-install fine - but I am
still not able to see the remote files. I also get a message that pops up when
I try to connect that says "Dreamweaver cannot determine the remote server
time. The Select Newer & Synchronize commands will be unavailable."

The interesting thing - it is several different sites on different servers
from each other that have this issue. And then a few sites on even still
different servers are fine.

Open the Files Panel.
change the pulldown to show the Remote Files.
click Connect.

Do you see the remote files?
If not- WHAT do you see?
A set of folders you didn't create, or nothing?

Alright - updated symptoms here. I can only "see" files for two of the 9 sites
I have in my site manager. In all others, I get to the supposed directory, and
there are no files visible in it, yet the sites are still functional when I try
to visit their URL's.

Also - all the sites I can't see, get that same error message. Do I need to
completely re-install my Dreamweaver?

Have you tried checking the "use passive ftp" box in the remote server info?

Depending on the site, I see one of two things after the little yellow file
folder:
www/ or /

It is the same whether I have use passive FTP checked, or not.

When I click (or double click) on the file folder on the remote server, I see
no files -- whether it is open, or closed.

I am having this same issue on an FTP site where I upload documents to a
printer I work for -- the upload worked fine on November 21st...I could see my
old files I had uploaded to their site. But now, I can't see a thing!

That's why I'm wondering if it's something in my Dreamweaver software - the
problem is not just isolated to one server or company. But odd that there are
still 2 that I can see out of the 9!

I am also running into this problem. I recently took over maintaining a site
and my uploaded files (PDF, GIF) also "disappear." They are listed on the
remote server and initially show the correct file size. However, after about a
minute or less after posting, the file size becomes 0 KB. This occurs
regardless of the FTP modes used, firewalls, etc.

This is characteristic of a site that has exceeded its storage capacity.
Have you?

That is so odd. I think I am going to try un-installing, and re-installing
Dreamweaver - since that is the only "constant" with the various websites and
servers I am trying to access. I think the sites are hosted on 3 different
services - if they were all the same host, I'd think it had something to do
with them. Will let you know how it turns out!

What happens when you use some other FTP client to connect?

Have you changed anything in the network lately? Such as a different router?

I just found an (old) update for my Dreamweaver MX 2004 that I had not installed. I am going to try to installing that and see if it helps.

Nope - the update did not make a difference - and this is so odd because I
still have a few websites (I know one is hosted by 1and1) that I CAN still see.
Some of my Powweb sites I can't see, and a third party's websites I can't see
either, not to mention the printer with whom I upload files via ftp (using
Dreamweaver).

Yup...we were running out of space. Sorry to have bothered y'all.

We had internet problems this past weekend - my husband was on the phone with
AT&T for 1-1/2 hours - they did some things with the router, but supposedly put
it back the way it was after all was said and done. Will check and see if
he knows of any specific changes that were made and kept.

Just curious - but if the router is the issue, why would changes in the router
(that I'm hard-wired in to) make a difference on some, but not all website
servers?

A router setting probably caused this-

try this technote-

The section on Server Compatibility may resolve and work around the router
issues.

They had us make some changes in our modem to make it be a bridge. But service
was worse, so it was (supposedly) changed back - everything except the password.

It had been PPPOE, and it is still set that way.

We may try bypassing the router completely and see if that makes a difference.

I appreciate your time and efforts. I'm still not able to pull up the page.
I've tried in both my browsers. I'll see if I have better luck when my husband
returns home and try from his laptop.

If that doesn't work, would you be able to copy the text from that page and
either post it here, or send me a private message? Two clients are getting
ready to send me updates to their web pages and right now I can't upload their
pages!

have you tried some other ftp client to connect?

can you bypass the router and connect your computer directly to the modem?

Do the modem/router have "reset" buttons to return them to the default state
of settings?

that you can't follow a google link to an adobe page leads me to think there
is a major problem.

go to http://google.com

paste this into the search box:

We are going to try to bypass the router and see if we still have problems.

We actually have been thinking we had modem problems but AT&T is trying to
tell us otherwise. We have been having more and more connectivity problems over
the past 6 months. Could the modem be the issue?

As far as trying another ftp client - I went through the 1and1's and powweb's
control panels and was able to access the FTP and was able to see the files for
the several sites those host.

I don't have a clue how to access the control panel for the printer I upload
files to.

Interestingly enough - I have two websites that clients have hosted through
1and1.com -- one I can log in through Dreamweaver and see all the files, the
other I can not.

Disk usage on the third site (server through my sister in another state) I
can't access is no where near full - but again, I can access the files through
the cpanel.

And finally a fourth site on a totally different server (I believe through
AT&T...client set it all up, only gave me log-ins) will not let me in at all.
Apparently I don't have the cpanel password which doesn't make sense to me - so
I can't verify that one.

Okay -

We spent an hour and a half with AT&T, ended up going back to an "old"
configuration of router and modem....and I can see my files again!

Still having some spotty connection issues, but I can do my work! So it was a
connection issue after all -- probably the router itself because when I was
plugged straight into the modem, Dreamweaver worked fine.

Thanks so much for your time and efforts!
